Now we understand the reason why Lannister troops were so loyal to Tywin.

Those who watch the critically acclaimed HBO TV series Game of Thrones know who Tywin Lannister was before his untimely death. He was the head of the proud House Lannister who currently rule the seven kingdoms. Tywin was inspirational, strong, and wise – qualities all good leaders possess. So it didn’t come as much of a surprise when he was used in an advert for the Rugby World Cup giving a motivational speech.

Game of Thrones is such a successful franchise that apart from commercial spin-offs such as this one, it has been turned into countless other products and games. Apart from the equally successful Game of Thrones title developed by video game company Telltale Games, the show has also launched an online game on hosted on Pocketfruity. The game is called Game of Thrones: 243 Ways to Win, which was released so that GoT could reach a wider audience. The 7th season of the Game of Thrones is set to be released next year, and new commercially-licensed products are expected to be launched soon to help create hype for the upcoming episodes.

If you don’t watch Game of Thrones, no problem! The two and a half minute ad below shows the qualities of a good motivational speaker so it’s worth the watch. Despite the fact that it’s scripted (and meant to be funny at times), the speech, as well as Charles Dance’s impersonation of his fearless character, captured what it’s like to inspire and motivate people through speech.

Fully-dressed and equipped with a stern tone, Tywin Lannister first tells the rugby fans what they should expect with their upcoming match: “there will be pain, there will be blood.” A good motivational speaker is honest to their audience. Honesty is a way of creating a connection with people, and this is the first step of making people listen to you as well as trusting you.

Then, when the facts have been laid out, he tells them not to be afraid but to rise to the occasion. They have been waiting their whole lives for this occasion, and Lannister reminds them of the importance this. He also encourages them to work as a team for there can be no victories without teamwork.

Then, when he makes them feel like their respective teams could achieve the impossible because they’ve worked hard for it, Lannister yells out, “We are going to raise the roof on every stadium from the northeast to the southwest!” His rousing speech empowers the fans that are huddled in the changing room.

A motivational speech tailoured for a team should include three basic elements: honesty, advice and encouragement. While this was only a commercial in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup, it certainly conveyed some important messages. Everything is possible with hard work – some people just need to realise their potential.
